JØRDYN explores gender nonconformity on "Wake Up (not quite a woman)"

The heartfelt, dreamy new single that emerging artist JØRDYN nearly scrapped.

Black indie singer-songwriter JØRDYNs newest single “Wake Up (not quite a woman)” continues the Cincinnati-based artist’s history of creating deeply emotional and catchy folk-pop songs, which was firmly established on their debut EP i didn’t ask for this, released earlier this year.

A driving beat and steady strum start the song with an upbeat feel. When JØRDYN’s soft yet captivating vocals join in, the track gains a dreamy feel. That soundscape is further instilled in the chorus when delicate strings appear and the emotion begins to swell.

It’s against this beautiful backdrop that JØRDYN explores their struggles with creating and maintaining relationships as a gender non-conforming individual.

“Gender isn’t black and white, there is so much grey. This song is about the grey. Feeling misunderstood because of your self-expression. Feeling like others won’t want to be with you simply because ‘they just don’t get it.’ It’s about the frustration of all of this.”

Written just before their debut EP was released in May, this song came out of JØRDYN’s desire to craft an upbeat but honest track, two things she often struggles to combine.

“Most of my deepest, most honest feelings aren’t ’pretty’ and can’t be wrapped up in a happy pop single.”

Even though she considered scrapping the song, JØRDYN showed it to her band and producer, and they loved it. The group quickly got to work, having fun collaborating which ultimately led to the song taking on quite a few elements and sounds that are completely new to JØRDYN’s music.

Describing the process as a labour of love, she hopes listeners enjoy it too, maybe even enough to dance along.

“It’s just a happy song about not fitting in which I think, no matter who we are, everyone can relate to.“
