Indie singer-songwriter Kaciny tackles grief in the most upbeat way on her latest single.
Brooklyn-born indie singer-songwriter Kaciny recently released the second single from her
upcoming debut EP GOOD GRIEF - and it’s a song you can’t help but fall in love with from the first note. “(I WANNA FEEL) Everything” has an undeniably fun, summertime feel and yet its inspiration comes from Kaciny's heartbreaking experiences with grief.
From her divorce to her mother’s passing, Kaciny felt her sense of self and purpose drifting as she went through the cycle of grief - each stage represented on her upcoming EP. Representing acceptance, the fifth and final stage, “(I WANNA FEEL) Everything” focuses on embracing all of our feelings and reminds listeners that not everything is in our control, and that’s ok.
“The human experience isn’t meant to be dulled. You miss out on so much colour and richness when you do that. Everything ends and it doesn’t have to be so bad, because there’s always the chance for a better beginning if you’re open to it.”
Beyond her desire to capture acceptance in musical form, Kaciny knew she wanted an “iconic synth lead line” to start off the track. With inspiration like Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and Paramore’s After Laughter album, Kaciny leaned into a refreshed 80s sound - perfect for fans of The 1975, COIN, The Aces and LANY. When it comes to the recording process, Kaciny laid out the initial ideas in her home studio.
“I usually start by layering out the vocals first since I didn’t pick up instruments until a little later in life, so it just feels natural to build out a song with my voice.”
Knowing that a big, easy-to-remember chorus would be such a fun experience when performing live, Kaciny says gang vocals were a must. Once she had an outline she was happy with, she sent it over to producer Evan Walley.
“He took it from a rough idea and brought it all the way to love I didn’t lock in all the lyrics until the day of the session and hearing it fully fleshed out instrumentally helped me get it across the finish line.”
