For most, the desire to work in the music industry comes from a deep passion for music. Whether for the creation of music itself, the admiration of specific artists, or the chance to connect with like-minded individuals, some music-inspired happiness usually plays a role in one's decision to pursue a career in music.


Despite these generally positive inspirations, taking your first steps into the business can be incredibly daunting. Even to outsiders, it's become an accepted fact that the entertainment industry is highly competitive for both artists and those behind the scenes. This belief is only reinforced further when those on the "inside" refuse to share their knowledge and experiences with those aspiring to join them.


Whether you're a seasoned industry professional or a fan dreaming of working in the industry, we should be brought together in celebration of our shared love for music, not pitted against each other. Why gatekeep when we can uplift one another and make the business better at the same time?


Since deciding to study Music Business, start a music blog and pursue a career in the entertainment industry, I have been blown away by the number of generous and kindhearted people I have met. Among them is Kasey Talarek, Music Publicist, Curator, Branding & Development Coach and Founder of Poetry Dans La Rue.


In the spirit of tearing down barriers and inspiring others to make their passions into careers, Kasey and I put together a list of 8 myths and misconceptions surrounding the music industry. Keep reading to discover the truth behind each!

Myth #1: You can’t get into the industry without a music business-related credential.


While it certainly doesn’t hurt to have background knowledge and experience, you do not need any specific credentials to get started toward your dream in the music business. Many folks in the marketing and PR space started out with a music blog!



Myth #2: If your song/playlist doesn’t get a certain number of streams/likes/shares, it must mean it’s not 'good enough.


It’s hard to get *organic* numbers of followers, likes, streams, etc. It doesn’t mean your music or outlet isn’t ‘good enough,’ it just means you have to be consistent, keep growing, and make meaningful connections.



Myth #3: Being a fan is unprofessional.


You can be a fan and be professional at the same time. Sure, some fan-related behaviours can be unprofessional, but if you use your judgement and channel that passion, it can actually improve your work as an industry professional by showcasing your knowledge and genuine care.



Myth #4: Everyone gets paid to do X job.


Many media outlets, curators, blogs, artists, writers, etc., may or may not get paid to do certain things in the industry. Media outlets offer interviews, reviews, and playlists for free or a small fee (submission platforms or donations). Artists don’t make much off of streams. It’s not always glamorous.



Myth #5: My taste in music is not cool or indie enough.


There are so many genres and artists, none of which are right or wrong. That’s the beauty of it, music is subjective, and everyone can love what they love and find a community who loves it too.



Myth #6: Everyone is _____ (adjective: snobby, competitive, gatekeeping, etc.)


Actually, the opposite. Most people in many areas of the music industry are willing to connect and help you. Even higher-level people often take time to meet with or mentor entry-level learners or artists for support and direction. There are a ton of communities to connect with, and it’s not as intimidating as it seems.



Myth #7: There’s no use starting my own blog since there are already blogs/curators out there.


Sure, lots of people have blogs or curation platforms, but you shouldn’t let that deter you. It’s exciting to join a community of folks who love discovering, discussing and sharing music. If you want to start a blog, do it!



Myth #8: You have to do things by a certain age.


Not at all. There are industry professionals, business owners, and artists who are successful at all ages. Some don’t see “success/growth” until later in their career. It’s never too late to start or keep going.
