Rising indie artist Jack Boyd releases a cheeky, melancholy track off his upcoming EP.
Jack Boyd’s latest single has just landed and you don’t want to miss it! The third release
from his upcoming EP, Fiona, what makes you smile?, "Jesus saves"uniquely blends feelings of happiness and sadness, something not unlike Jack’s previous releases.
The Texas-based, RV-dwelling, left-of-centre indie artist often pairs cute, groovy soundscapes with emotional storylines - this time tackling religious trauma experienced while growing up in America’s bible belt.
“I just wanted to write a cheeky song about the typical things that ‘sad’ songs talk about. In my head that usually involves relationships, addiction, love, religion and I wanted to make it feel like there’s a bit of a humor to it that would fit the upbeat energy of the production.”
“Jesus saves” feels effortlessly cool, flowing between Americana, Trip Hop and 90s Slacker Rock - from the chill drum beat, twangy guitar sounds and Jack’s delicate, mumbly vocals. The track has even earned praise from Apple Music’s Zane Lowe:
“It’s very much in keeping right now of a sound that I’m very happy with which seems to be rediscovered through artists like Role Model, like Jack Antonoff… that sense of what it’s like to listen to somebody actually express themselves.” - Zane Lowe
Q&A with Jack Boyd:
Q: "What was the writing/recording process like?"
A: "The process was pretty similar to other songs I’ve made, I had a guitar line that was stuck in my head and after laying that down I started to build the rest of the track. I think the vocals were the hardest because I wanted them to sound good but also shitty."
Q: "What do you hope listeners take away from 'Jesus saves'?"
A: "I hope listeners take away a sense of feeling seen. I feel like I’m writing about things that I want to talk about and I think there’s probably other people out there who have similar thoughts and feelings."

With “Jesus saves” finally out for the world to hear, the countdown is on for Jack’s second EP. Arriving this fall, Fiona, what makes you smile? comes less than a year since his debut EP, Bad Parts, which set the bar high and landed Jack Boyd at the top of my 'ones to watch' list.
