Sweet Spotlights: Valley's 'Water The Flowers, Pray For A Garden'

Valley enters a new era as a trio with their most personal and vulnerable album yet.

About The Album:

Canadian alt-pop band Valley recently unveiled their latest album, Water The Flowers, Pray For A Garden. Leaning into a slightly more laid-back indie pop sound, this project sees Valley at their most vulnerable as Rob, Karah and Alex enter a new era as a trio.

The album’s 12 tracks came together with the help of long-time friend Chase Lawrence (of COIN) during a therapeutic escape to a cabin in the Smoky Mountains. It was really the first time the band went through something difficult together and, despite the hurt, it gave them the chance to look back on their journey as friends and bandmates and rediscover the passion for music that initially brought them together.

Putting such honest and difficult feelings into the world through music can’t be easy, but the band says the internal shame of not releasing the music would be much worse than any amount of fear or nervousness.

“We've always – especially putting out this album – looked at it that way. It's like yes, it's scary and yes, we're kind of scared to put so much personal music in the world, but it's also all we ever wanted to do is just tell people real stories and what's happening in our lives. I think that risk has such greater rewards emotionally and spiritually than suppressing that and being scared to do that.”

Q&A with Valley

Q: “You’ve talked about how this album is quite personal and honest. How did you feel about releasing it, and how do you feel now that it’s out in the world?”

A: “It’s oddly been a real breath of fresh air where we're in our own skin right now and it feels really good. Obviously, the songs talk about a lot of hardship and just difficult things for us to still process, but we're just happy to have it out there 'cause we know someone is probably going through something similar and has this record to attach to now. Which, again, no expectations for people to do that, but knowing that it is out there and people are connecting with it, that's the bonus of this whole thing, we get to share that together. So, I would say relieved. I think that relief is the word here – we’re just relieved it's finally out ‘cause we wanted for people to hear it at the end of the day.”
